Cranleigh is very pleased to announce the appointment of Grant Fellows as our new head coach. He will start on Monday 4 November – immediately after the half term – possibly popping in before – and comes highly recommended with excellent previous coaching experience over the last 12 years. He is already a  Level 4 coach and is shortly taking his Master Club Coach Award (Level 5), so is very well qualified to coach at all levels – juniors and adults. Grant will be working full time at Cranleigh, so will be keen to meet you all. He will be working closely with Chris Chapman and David Arulanandam. Grant is able to take on the sessions that Jaymie was doing previously and will be keen to put on new ones too – so watch this space. If you want to register your interest in coaching sessions, please email Christine and she will put you in touch.

There was a great turn out of 65 people for the Quiz and Fish & Chip night on Saturday that helped raise over £500 for local children’s charity, Jigsaw4u. Team ‘Puzzled’, comprising Dom, Janie, Katherine, Joel (for most), and Mark, won first place with a closely fought battle against team ‘Puzzler ‘. Thank you to everyone who took part.

Well done to the 3rd team, who finished 3rd in their division this summer, level on points with Riddlesdown in 2nd but missing out on promotion by one set. The league started brightly with the normal four – Joel & Martin and Jayson & Usman – winning 3-1 at home to Reedham Park 3rds. Nao stepped in for Joel, who was interrailing, in a hard-fought 2-2 draw with Riddlesdown 1sts. And Ali stepped for Joel (work) in another draw, at home to Purley 7s. The regular four returned for the match at Raynes Park 1sts, but the home team, who stormed the division, were too strong, winning 4-0. An unusual four of Martin, Tony, Joel and Pepe, patched together because of the short notice arrangements, finished the season on a high, though, beating Telford Park 3rds 4-0. Tony, in a one-off return from niggling injury, and Martin rolled back the…

The ladies 1s – with the usual partnerships of Katherine & Louise and Chris & Sharon – have been a bit unlucky this season, missing key players and losing close 3-1s away to Sanderstead and at home to Virgin Active and conceding a walkover to Limpstead. However, they managed a 2-2 against a strong Dulwich side, welcoming back from her maternity break Amanda, who narrowly lost a championship tie break. There were also appearances from Julie and Iun.

David Arulanandam has been awarded the Aegon Coach of the Month for August in recognition for his work in Merton, Surrey. David was rewarded largely for his work at Tamworth Recreation Ground, where he has established repeatedly high attendance record every weekend at his Mini Tennis sessions. His nominator and Ambassador & Development Officer for the charity Tennis For Free, Neil Kapoor, said: “He has been able to create a sustainable programme for many reasons, but one striking aspect of David’s personality is the special emotional connection he has developed with the parents and children, many of whom come from underprivileged backgrounds.” David said: “I am profoundly honoured, thrilled and also privileged to receive the Aegon Coach of the Month award. I would like to thank everyone, parents and coaches, who recommended me for this award and also provided continued support and guidance to deliver these tennis coaching sessions to…

At his leaving do on Thursday night, Cranleigh gave a great send-off to Head Coach Jaymie Paramu, after 5 happy years during which he  helped build up club membership. We now have over 100 juniors playing regularly and many new adult members. Good luck to Jaymie in his new role as Performance Coach at Horley. We will miss him.

Our head coach at Cranleigh, Jaymie Paramu, is unfortunately (for us) moving on, to Horley, after nearly five years of great work at the club, over all ages and abilities. So, we are hosting a leaving do for him next Thursday (29th of August) at the club from 7 30. Juniors are free to use the courts and table tennis, and several members have kindly offered to do food. Hope to see you there.

Coach Chris Chapman was a champion at Cromer’s Open Summer Tennis Tournament,  a major event in the UK Tennis calendar. He won the Over 55s Singles; and was a semi finalist in  the over 45s Singles and Doubles. So well done Chris – a big boost for tennis at Cranleigh.

Following the departure of Jaymie Paramu at the end of August, a new Licensed Head Coach is required to lead the coaching team at Cranleigh (Merton Park); to take initiatives to develop the adult coaching programme, improve competitive opportunities and increase the adult membership, as well as maintaining the highly successful junior coaching programme. The Head Coach must be licensed with the LTA and have a minimum qualification of Development Coach Award (or equivalent). Email the club to ask for details and job specification. Deadline for applications: Thursday 12 September 2013 Interviews and on court assessments will be held on Sunday 22 September – with a back up date of Tuesday evening 24 September
